The City Commissioners will lead the parade in the mini-firetruck. Neighborhoods and organizations are encouraged to make floats and join the fun.

Parade line-up is at the First Baptist Church of Decatur at 5:30 p.m. The parade begins at 6 p.m. It ends at the Community Bandstand on the square with a presentation of colors and the Star Spangled Banner.

The concert, featuring the Callanwolde Concert Band, begins at 7 p.m. in the Community Bandstand. Fireworks begin at dark (approximately 9 p.m.) and are shot from the top of the DeKalb County parking deck.

Gike and his Pedicabs

I found this article about one of our own, Gike, aka Mike Gerke.  A runner, triathlete, Ironman, and all around good guy who I keep on running into.

Pedicabs find niche in Decatur, but going is slow elsewhere in area

Friday, June 26, 2009

There’s a new way to get around in Decatur, different even from the bicycles, scooters, rent-by-the-hour cars and mass transit that already make the city unique.

It involves a pair of pedicabs — bright yellow boxes large enough to seat two or three passengers, attached to an adult-sized tricycle — powered by Mike Gerke’s legs. For a few bucks, he runs short tours around town, takes tired event-goers to their parked cars or provides easy trips home after a long night out

June 8, 2009 (Jackson, GA) – The XTERRA Georgia Trail Run Series continued on strong as almost 200 runners from six states raced over 15 rugged kilometers through the Dauset Trails yesterday. As the fastest growing season in the 2009 XTERRA Trail Run Series, Georgia has developed a faithful following of extreme, off-road runners, and competition remains fierce.
Coming through with the wins were Nathan Haskins and Emily Anne Vall taking the men’s and women’s races in 54:33 and 1:08:34 respectively.

EXTEND YOURSELF

I found this article online at runnersworld.com.

Tips for Beginning Runners

EXTEND YOURSELF

Double your endurance in just six weeks.

By Jeff Galloway

From the June 2009 issue of Runner’s World

Imagine running twice as far as you do now. Mission impossible? It’s easier than you think. And there’s good reason to try. Adding more miles can boost your stamina, help manage weight, and help you get more comfortable on the road. Here’s how.

Shoot For Three
A three-day running week is the best way to run more and stay injury-free. When you rest before and after a running day, your muscles feel fresher and you’ll have more energy to go farther.

Make Every Mile Count
Giving each run a purpose will help you keep up your routine without getting stale. Designate one day for a “maintenance” run (an easy-paced run that helps maintain fitness), another day to run long, and a third day for speed play (aka “fartlek”). On this run, set out at your usual pace, and pick up the tempo when you feel ready. You might accelerate to a landmark you see ahead, like a tree. Then jog to recover. Take off again when you’re ready.

Slow Down
On your long run, slow the pace from the start to cut your chances of getting exhausted—or hurt. Your pace should be about three minutes per mile slower than it is on a maintenance run. So if you usually run a 10-minute mile, aim for a 13-minute pace when you run long. Take a one-minute walk break every one to three minutes.

OurSong Bon Appétit Concert

OurSong - Bon Appétit Splash

OurSong, Atlanta’s only gay and lesbian mixed chorus, comes full circle with Bon Appétit, the last concert of the 2008-2009 “Eat, Drink and be Merry” themed-season, June 19 and 20, 8:00PM at Emory University’s Cannon Chapel, 515 Kilgo Circle, Atlanta.

Surely Julia Child is looking down and smiling appreciatively, wielding her paring knife like an orchestra baton, delighted that OurSong is molding her signature yodel of “Bon Appétit” into another scrumptious musical smorgasbord. They have saved the best for last, as the chorus serves up both cutting comedy and somber reflection in each musical selection, with two major themes: food and marriage.

In response to the passage of Prop. 8 in Calif., OurSong presents their own version of the “Funny or Die” website hit, “Prop. 8 The Musical,” written by the composer of “Hairspray,” Marc Shaiman, who is openly gay. The video version, starring Jack Black, Allison Janney and John C. Reilly has been an Internet smash, with 1.8 million hits the first day it was uploaded.

Though there are lighthearted musical selections in Bon Appétit, including songs about ketchup, celery and potatoes, the final show for the season takes a more serious turn, not only with the topic of gay marriage, but with other serious themes surrounding food and aspects of marriage in general.

With selections such as ‘Famine Song,’ along with melodies set to the words of poets such as Emily Dickinson–’Fame is a Fickle Food,’ OurSong proves, again, that a concert can be entertaining and thought provoking at the same time.

Tickets for OurSong’s Bon Appétit concert are $20 and are available for purchase from the OurSong website, at the door each day of the concert, or from any chorus member. OurSong’s CD entitled, Out of a Dream, is also for sale at the website and will be available for purchase at each concert.

Saba in Oakhurst

Recently Saba, a pasta joint with traditional and creative dishes, opened in Oakhurst.  It’s located in the space that was once Calavino’s.  Saba has handmade pastas, great sandwiches, homade desserts among other things on their menu.  Dinner, brunch, and lunch is available but check first, Oakhurst doesn’t have lunch hours.

I write about Saba because we went to the one in Emory Village.  We’ve gone there before and we will make it to the one in Oakhurst soon.  We left full and content.  We had the 4 cheese ravioli and the eggplant ravioli in Vindaloo and pesto sauce.  The eggplant dish was creative especially with a mix of vondaloo and pesto.  I also had a bowl of their gazpacho which is one of my favorite soups, ever!  Add to that a side of homemade potato chips and chocolate chip canoli’s; we were hapily full.

So try out Saba if you haven’t already.  Support the local Oakhurst businesses.

Second Sunday Strolls at Decatur Cemetery

I found this from the Decatur Active Living blog site.  Since we run though the cemetary a lot (when it is open), I found it to be very interesting.  Enjoy!

You are invited to come out to the Second Sunday Strolls this Sunday, June 14, at 2:30 p.m. in Decatur Cemetery. This 30-45 minute historic walk is led by volunteer and Cemetery expert Cathy Vogel. Whether this is your first visit or your 30th, you’ll learn something you didn’t know about metro Atlanta’s oldest public burial space. Meet at the well house gazebo (pictured above) off of Commerce Drive.

And if you can’t make this Sunday’s walk, here are the remaining dates for 2009:July 12August 9September 13October 11

Calavino’s Lunch/Dinner Promo

I ran into Calavino this past week and she told me about her Lunch and Dinner promotion.  Here are the details from her Facebook page.

She also told me about movie nights.  When I looked on her page though, movie night is on Wednesday night.  That’s running and Mojo’s, sorry.  Feel free to pass this along to other though and don’t forget the lunch and dinner promo if you are in that area for lunch.  The dinner promo is good for the week and not just for the day of eating lunch.

Phnom Penh in Tucker

Hilary had a coupon for this restaurant because we have never tried Cambodian Cuisine before.  We were not disappointed.  Out of 6 dishes, we struck out on 1 because we added too much coconut milk.  It was a real good meal and at a good price.  It was a drive out to Tucker but it was well worth it.  There are several reviews about the restaurant from TripAdvisor, Yelp, Urban Spoon, and Creative Loafing.

Apply Now for the ING New York City Marathon

Apply Now for the ING New York City Marathon
Sunday, November 1, 2009

Get to know the thrill of a 26.2-mile journey through NYC with fellow ING New York City marathoners.

The ING New York City Marathon 2009 lottery will be open for U.S. applicants until 11:59 p.m. June 1, 2009

Visit their website for more information.

For the opportunity to run for a charity team, such as Team for Kids, Fred’s Team, or another one of their charities, visit their website.

I ran the NYC marathon and it was such an incredible experience.  I had goals of a PR time which I didn’t meet but the experience of running through the city with so many fans cheering was worth it.  I was expecting to run it this year and not last.  If you apply 3 times and you don’t get in, you are automatically get in on the 4th try.  I “won” the lottery on the 3rd time.  If you ever have a chance to run the NYC Marathon, take the opportunity.

National Running Day - June 3, 2009

As luck would have it, our first Wednesday run of June will be on National Running Day.  Check out the link here.

Cool City Decatur

Decatur was designated a Cool City by the Sierra Club Cool City Campaign in March 2007. Decatur joined approximately 1000 other cities in signing the Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, pledging to reduce carbon emissions within the city to 7% below 1990 levels by 2012.

In the spring of 2008, a group of Sierra Club members collaborated with individuals from other community, religious and environmental organizations to form Decatur Cool City Coalition, DC3.

DC3 believes Decatur can be a model to other cities in Georgia through the actions taken to address Climate Change. DC3 is committed to supporting city government, schools, churches, residents, and businesses in Decatur to reduce their carbon emissions by 2012.

Please, contact Eleanor Hand at decatur.coolcity@sierraclub.org or (404)-213-3025 if you would like to participate in the Decatur Cool City Campaign. DC3 has bimonthly meetings at 7:30PM at the Atlanta Friends Meeting House in Decatur.

Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park Scavenger Hunt

From Big Peach Running Company…

A Hunting We Will Go…

First, how about hunting for some clues while you get to experience magnificent Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park!

Here’s how it works:
25 teams of 2-4 participants* meet at the park’s visitor center for a fun, friendly trivia contest. The team with the most correct answers gets to leave on the scavenger hunt first! Then, armed with your best puzzle solving skills and a digital camera, or cell phone camera…a hunting you will go! Follow the clues as you learn about the history of this incredible park. Take a picture of your team at each site, before heading back. Yes you will be mostly on trails, and yes you will experience some hills (it is called Kennesaw MOUNTAIN after all), and the route should be about 5-6 miles. (* Participants under 17 must be accompanied by an adult. Families with lots of children (more than 2) may sign up as a team, and not leave any of the little hunters behind!)

The team solving the most clues, not necessarily the fastest team wins! Talk about fun for the whole family!! All groups must finish the hunt by 11:30am. Big Peach is providing some great prizes to the winning teams!

This is a very cool, unique event put on as a joint project between Big Peach Running Co., and the National Parks Service at Kennesaw Mountain! A donation of $20 is requested for each team. Proceeds go to the Kennesaw Mountain Historical Association for the benefit of the educational programs of Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. Please bring a check or cash with you to the event on Saturday.

Now all you need to do is sign up. Please have only one team member register for the run, and happy hunting!

Nectar in Oakhurst

This past weekend we took a walk around the neighborhood and made our way to Oakhurst.  We passed through the village and found the doors of Nectar open.  We have seen the signs but we have always missed it being open.  So we went in and tried it out.  It’s motto is “Be Healthy = Be Happy.”  With a motto like that we had to try it out.

We had the Nutella, Organic Banana, and Soy Milk smoothie.  It is described as having protein, a brain stormer, and energizer.  Needless to say it was good.  There was also a full selection of food and ice creams to go along with the various smoothies.  We look forward to trying out the other stuff on the menu.

They are great neighborhood citizens donating their food waste to the Oakhurst Community Garden compost pile.  Nectar is also from the restauranteurs who brough us Bhojanic.  Try out the local neighborhood eatery and smoothie place.

Clover Coffee at Dancing Goats

A couple of weekends ago we stopped in at Dancing Goats Coffee Bar in Decatur.  We have known about the Clover coffee machine for a while and wanted to try it.  And Dancing Goats has the $11,000 machine.  Wired magazine did an article on the Clover coffee machine and that’s how we came to know about it.  Here’s the link to the article.  With all the publicity and knowing about it for some time, we had to try it.

It was great coffee.  The price wasn’t much more than a regular cup of coffee either.  The first thing I notice is that there was a whoile ritual to it.  The whole beans are measured precisely and then ground.  The grinds go into the machine and again a ritual of making a plus sign, “+”, to agitate the grounds as the water pours in.  Then the machine does its thing.  Every bean has a specific setting to it to enhance the flavor.  As it comes out  it wasn’t as piping hot as a regular cup of coffee.  The flavor was full, tasty.  Grant it that we chose the Ethiopian Blueberry Coffee so that was a lot of the great taste also.

So if you have a chance, go and try it.  Taste it for yourself; try coffee made from an $11K coffee machine.
